On the occasion of the stage production of "Der Messias" in Salzburg, an adaptation by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart of the oratorio by Georg Friedrich Händel, Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac presents drawings by the American artist Robert Wilson.
The new drawings on the theme of "Der Messias" were created in autumn 2019, during the initial rehearsal phase of the stage project. For Wilson they are the undercurrent of this completely abstract work. They are not meant to illustrate the production, but represent the power beneath the surface of the music. In these graphic works, fueled by influences ranging from performance art to Minimalism, the internationally renowned director, stage architect, designer, choreographer, curator, and visual and light artist captures on paper the ephemeral moments of his productions, which are strongly influenced by light.
"Der Messias", a co-production of the Mozarteum Foundation Salzburg with the Salzburg Festival and the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, is directed by Robert Wilson with musical direction by Marc Minkowski. The premiere will take place on the 23rd of January 2020.
