Einstein on the Beach / Berlin

  • Haus der Berliner Festspiele Schaperstraße 24 10719 Berlin Germany (map)

"Universally hailed as one of the greatest artistic achievements of the 20th century, Einstein on the Beach breaks all rules of conventional opera, described as "an experience to cherish for a lifetime" by The New York Times.

First staged in Avignon in 1976, Einstein on the Beach launched composer/lyricist Philip Glass and director/designer Robert Wilson to international success after performing sell-out seasons in Europe and New York.

With no story, hero, or heroine, Einstein unfolds as a hypnotic tableau, inspired by the poetic idea of a genius, propelled by Glass' sublime score. A cosmic chorus of syllables, numbers, streams of consciousness, and enigmatic poems are punctuated by Lucinda Childs' choreography which unfold beneath Wilson's spectacular set, enlivening this epic, seminal masterwork."
